Panel on 4D-5D BIM for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction at ICCCBE2024 international conference

Panel on 4D-5D BIM for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction at ICCCBE2024 international conference

On August 26, 2024, at the ICCCBE2024 conference, Professors Conrad Boton and Silvio Melhado hosted a panel titled "4D-5D for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction: Perspectives and Insights," bringing together industry and academic leaders to discuss the transformative potential of 4D and 5D Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the construction sector.

Moderated by Professors Conrad Boton and Silvio Melhado, the panel featured three renowned experts who shared their unique perspectives on the implementation of 4D-5D BIM:

  • Sean Boyer, Vice President of Reconstruction at Pomerleau, provided the contractor’s perspective, explaining how BIM is redefining on-site project management and improving risk mitigation.
  • Dr. Michel Guevremont, Senior Lead Engineer at Hydro-Québec, represented the owner’s perspective, emphasizing the importance of BIM technologies in decision-making and optimizing large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Marcus Hashchak, Lead of the 3D Solutions Group at AtkinsRéalis, shared the engineering perspective, highlighting how 4D-5D BIM is revolutionizing the design phase and enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration.

Throughout the session, the speakers addressed key topics such as:

  • Real-world examples and lessons learned from BIM implementation.
  • The added value, both financial and qualitative, that 4D-5D BIM brings to construction projects.
  • Technological challenges, including software interoperability and the learning curve for teams adopting these new tools.
  • Contractual, budgetary, and training issues, essential for successful BIM integration.

The discussion highlighted the immense potential of 4D-5D BIM to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and increase project success. The speakers also stressed the need for continuous investment in training and the importance of overcoming technological and contractual challenges to fully leverage these advanced tools.

We would like to thank all the participants in this panel and the ICCCBE2024 conference for providing a platform to discuss the future of architecture, engineering, and construction.
